NMTC Trail Challenge
* We don’t claim for this to be a comprehensive list of options for any of the areas. It is really just some quick notes to help get things started. Sites such as the Duluth Parks & Recreation Online Trail Map (nice!), Jay Cooke Summer Trails, AllTrails or others can assist in putting routes together.

Though we’ve included a GPS for the starting line to help get you into the general area, you do not have to start on this exact location.

Don’t forget to log your runs as you do them using our handy-dandy Google Form. See our home page for additional rules and dates.

RaceTrails in this Area *
Lester ParkLester Park has many trails for hiking, biking, and XC skiing. The race usually uses the XC ski loops, but feel free to wander, beautiful rivers and so much to see.

GPS: 46.84037969363744, -92.00682878494263
Zapp's Loop
(Mission Creek Area)
The Mission Creek Hiking Trail is used by the Zapp's, Voyageur 50M and Curnow Marathon races. The SHT also passes through, as do many nicely rolling biking (multi-use) trails.

GPS: 46.661025465208745, -92.27379709482193
Hartley Nature AreaHartley Nature Area has many trails for hiking / biking (multi-use). The SHT also passes through. Climb Rock Knob, pass through the meadow, wander the woodlands - many options to mix and match!

GPS: 46.838530264062044, -92.08259582519531
Ely's PeakThe SHT connects Magney-Snively to Ely's Peak. We usually start at Magney, a bit of a trek to Ely's, but feel free to park over on Becks Road if you want more immediate access to the peak and the newer Ely's Peak spur loop which offers views of Ely's from a neighboring peak (highly recommended). The DWP and old railroad tunnel is also in the area.

GPS: 46.70211385878048, -92.22694158554077
Rolling Stone
(Spirit Mountain)
The race makes use of a dandy of a hill on the east side of Spirit, known as the Puker (now signed as such by COGGS), and surrounding home-grown trails. The SHT also passes through. Trails crossing the ski slopes up top and the DWP running across the bottom can be used to link the various options.

GPS: 46.720302817353264, -92.21607327461243
Brown's Point
(Superior Municipal Forest)
The race has used a mix of gravel roads and XC ski trails (there are many) in this municipal forest. Some ATV trails also criss-cross the area. It's quiet and low-traffic, whatever you choose.

GPS: 46.69202544854079, -92.14388966560364
Woodland Run
(Amity Creek Area)
The enigmatic Woodland run has used a varied mix of trails and gravel roads in this area, located out near a gravel pit off of Jean Duluth Road and stretching up past Vermilion Road. The SHT passes through, and there is an SHT spur in the area as well. The Amity River is also nearby. Bike (multi-use) trails also run through here, e.g. Morningside.

GPS: 46.844753488044745, -92.05517292022705
Bull Run
(Jay Cooke State Park)
Jay Cooke has a great many trails. Feel free to use any you'd like. The Bull Run leverages the Spruce and Lost Lake loops. It's quiet out there, away from the crowds - and this is a pretty rockin' course. Just sayin'...

GPS: 46.6441774, -92.3091781
Hawk RidgeThe race usually runs up Skyline Parkway along Hawk Ridge, cross over and return down the Snively Trail to the stone bridge. But don't limit yourself... The Hawk Ridge observatory and trail system offers a number of color-coded/marked trails great for exploring. Bike (multi-use) trails also run through here.
